USEFUL TOOLS FOR F/J STUDENTS

J-1 Academic Training Days Remaining Calculator

Quickly calculate your remaining Academic Training (AT) days based on accrued or expected accrued full course of study days, minus any past or current ATs.

Enter all past, current, and optionally, future AT periods. Cross-reference each past and current AT period you list with the DS-2019 that authorized it for accuracy. Part-time AT counts at the same rate as full-time AT.
For the purposes of determining total AT eligibility, only the period spanning your DS-2019 start date and your actual last day of classes accrues full course of study days.

Study duration uses the full inclusive span from program start through actual completion. If your program sponsor requires a different study-duration calculation, ask them to calculate your allowance separately.

Overlapping AT periods are permitted. Each calendar day is deducted once, even if several placements share that day. Start and end dates are included. A period spanning actual completion is split at that date for the totals. Confirm authorized dates and the calculation with your program sponsor.

For doctoral students, this tool checks pre-completion AT against study accrued to today (or completion, if earlier) and the standard 18-month limit. Proposed future study is not counted as already accrued. The calculator uses 18 months when completion is today or later, and a 36-month post-doctoral planning ceiling when completion is in the past, limited by program length. The 36-month total does not increase the pre-completion limit. Program sponsor-reviewed degree-required exceptions are outside this calculation.

Pre-completion Academic Training (Optional)

Include every AT period your program sponsor has authorized toward your course of study. Prospective future ATs that start and end before your expected last day of classes may be entered for planning purposes.

Post-completion Academic Training (Optional)

Leave this section empty if you have no actual or planned post-completion AT to include. Otherwise, enter the start and end dates for each period in any order. The calculator merges overlapping coverage and counts only uncovered days as gaps.

A period may begin before the current DS-2019 end date and continue beyond it. Actual completion of studies—not the DS-2019 end date alone—determines the pre/post-completion split. First post-completion AT must commence no later than 30 days after completion. This tool counts all intervening days against its planning balance, including the initial gap. It permits at most 30 gap days between entries as a tool limit, not a statement that the gap is legally allowed.

Method & official sources

The standard limit is the lesser of 18 months or the full course of study; eligible post-doctoral training has a 36-month total limit, also limited by study length and inclusive of prior AT. Degree-required exceptions need individual program sponsor review.

To show days, this tool measures 18 or 36 calendar months from your earliest listed AT start (or provisionally from the day after completion if no AT is entered), then applies study length and any entered STEM approval cap. That is an explicit estimation convention, not a government day-conversion formula. Authorizations include both endpoints. Gaps exclude the adjacent training/completion dates. RO/ARO counting practices may differ between schools, including whether particular gaps reduce the training balance. This calculator deducts those gaps conservatively. Have your own program sponsor verify the applicable limit, the treatment of each gap, and the final date through which training may be authorized.

These results are planning estimates. Your entries remain in this page’s memory and are discarded when you leave or reload; they are not uploaded and require no account. The calculators operate separately from the fixed-duration rule simulation.
